Arthur L."Otts" Garman, 83 years old of Reisterstown, died Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.
Born April 29, 1926 in Reisterstown, he was the son of the late George S. and Carrie M. Byerly Garman. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Diane Mathias Garman.
"Otts" was a graduate of Franklin High School and attended the University of Baltimore. He served honorably in WW II with the Army Air Force. He was involved with the Liberation of the Philippines and the Occupation of Japan.
He also helped free US prisoners and earned 2 battle stars. He was a partner in the Garman Brothers Lumber Company and Owner of Glyndon Laundry and Cleaners. He was past President of both the Baltimore Laundry Association and the Tri State Laundry Association. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a life member of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company, were he drove the ambulance.
He was past President of the Reisterstown Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the VFW and a life and honorary member of the American Legion Post 116. He was a member of the Reisterstown Kiwanis Club, a charter member of the Reisterstown Jaycees and was involved with Boy Scouts for 35 years. He was also involved with Meals on Wheels.
In addition to his wife, "Otts" is survived by his children and their spouses, Art Garman of Reisterstown, Bill and Denise Garman of Catonsville, Jane and Scott Martin of Northwood, NH., John and Christy Garman of Glyndon, Susan and Dave Dick of Sparta, N.J., Carol and Dave Horvath of Westminster and Mike and Jan Garman of Finksburg. Also survived by 22 grandchildren. Brother of Doris Mann of Pikesville, Mary Bean of Reisterstown and James D. Garman of Cockeysville.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Ann Bennett, Marie Shipley, George B., C. Edward and Louis W. Garman.
Friends may call at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel P.A. 11605 Reisterstown Rd. Owings Mills on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 PM.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 9:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 109 Main St. Reisterstown. Rev. Timothy P. Feaser officiating.
Interment in St. Paul's Cemetery, Arcadia, MD.
