Arthur Eugene "Pippy or Gene" Rhoten, 81 of Manchester died Thursday, July 16, 2009 at his residence after a battle of lung cancer.
Born Sunday, April 1, 1928 in Hampstead, he was the son of the late Lester "Lee" Rhoten, Sr. and Gladys Ruth Davidson Rhoten. He was the husband of the late Doris Jean Raver Rhoten and is survived by his wife Nancy L. Kelley Rhoten.
Mr. Rhoten attended school in Manchester. He worked for Black and Decker for 5 years on the assemble line. He then worked as an insurance agent for Washington National for 5 years and then for United Insurance Company for 31 years from which he retired in 1991. In retirement, he worked for South Hills Golf Course as a starter and preferred to play golf rather than eat.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters and sons in law Linda and Don Sweigart of Berlin, Sandra Drecchio of Parkville, Deborah and Butch Gemmill of Maryland Line; his son and daughter in law Kelly E. and Jody Rhoten of Owings Mills; his step daughter Brenda Joyce Hall and her husband Eddie; his brothers and sisters in law Lester "Bud" and Dottie Rhoten of Manchester, Robert and Jan Rhoten and Larry and Peggy Rhoten all of Hanover, PA; his sister in law Gerry Rhoten; grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of 7; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Charlie Rhoten and his sister Frances Long.
The family will receive friends 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester.
A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
Interment will be in New Lutheran Cemetery.
