Born August 18, 1941, at her home in Manchester, Maryland, she was the daughter of Floyd W. Reed and Mary Louise Shipley Reed.
She is survived by her children, Christine and James Manley, and Gregory and Barbara Hull; grandchildren Kailyn, Skylar, Logan, Alex and Rachel, Amanda and Sydni; and great-grandchildren Myles, Sully, and Dawson. She is also survived by her sister, Jane Zumbrum, and nephew, Todd Zumbrum. She treasured her family and the lifelong relationships she built through the years, including her beloved exchange student daughter, Any, with whom the family remained close for more than 40 years, as well as her spouse Rodrigo.
She graduated from North Carroll High School in 1959, where she served as president of her graduating class, and later earned her A.A. degree from Carroll Community College. In 1959, she was honored to be selected as Miss North Carroll and was also named Miss Manchester by the Manchester Fire Company.
A devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, she faithfully served in many roles throughout the years, including the Antioch Missionary Society, President of L.C.W., Secretary of Church Council, Director of Vacation Bible School, Sunday School teacher, and member of both the high school and adult choir. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and in 1961 married Richard Hull. She also founded and directed Pounds Off for Hunger.
Her working years reflected both dedication and versatility. She sold cosmetics door-to-door while still school-aged and later worked as a waitress at Russ Joy Inn. She served as a legal secretary for Ralph Hoffman and, while raising her family, typed term papers for students attending Western Maryland College and operated a typing business from her home. She later worked through Carroll County Personnel Services for Black & Decker, Lloyd Belt, Esq., L. Awalt Weller, Esq., and Paul Rice Enterprises. She also served as secretary for Immanuel Lutheran Church.
She continued her career with the Carroll County Circuit Court as a substitute court reporter, later worked with the Carroll County Board of Education as a secretary, and eventually returned to the Circuit Court as a full-time court reporter. She retired in 2006 from Carroll County Government after many years of dedicated service.
Following retirement, she worked part-time for Flowers by Evelyn and Jill’s Jams. She also volunteered for Carroll Hospital Center and enjoyed homemaking, cooking, reading, writing poetry, and spending time with family and friends. For many years, she lovingly wrote “Mother of the Year” poetry for Immanuel Lutheran Church.
She deeply loved family traditions, especially holidays, vacations to Ocean City and Deep Creek Lake, and gatherings filled with laughter and homemade treats. Her chocolate chip cookies became a favorite tradition and were enjoyed by everyone fortunate enough to receive them.
After retirement, she published several poetry books as well as children’s stories originally written for her grandchildren. When the stories were later condensed into books, her grandchildren became her illustrators.
