Carol George "Bud" Bender, 90, of Westminster died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at his residence.
Born in Elizabeth, NJ on April 29, 1918, he was the son of the late Carol George Bender and Marie M. Schmitt Bender. He was the husband of the late Theodora Rose "Teddy" Good Bender, his wife of 65 years, who died on July 31, 2005.
Mr. Bender was a self employed tool and die specialist and was the owner of Bender Machine and Tool Company. Later in life he started Bender Boat Works. Both of his businesses were located in Highland, NJ.
He was an avid bass fisherman and enjoyed archery winning many awards and medals in tournaments and competitions.
He built more than 300 speed skiffs, where many of his skiffs won awards including the Presidents Cup, 1964 in Potomac, and was a member of the A.P.B.A.
In addition, he was a member of the Westminster Elks, Moose Lodge, and VFW.
He was a volunteer at Carroll Lutheran Village and was recognized as Maryland Senior Volunteer of the Year in 2006.
Surviving is his daughter and son in law Linda Bender Jewell and Thomas S. Lavin of Westminster; his granddaughters Mary J. Pyper of Hanover and Carolyn K. Jewell of Baltimore; his great grandsons Mitchell Pyper and James Pyper both of Hanover; his brother Louis Raymond Bender.
He was predeceased by his sister Madesta L. Bender Schlaer and his brother William J. Bender.
At Mr. Bender's request his service and interment are to be private.
