Carol Martin Olson

Born 8/13/1938 in Folcroft, PA. Died 4/30/2010 in a snorkeling accident in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas while on a cruise. Carol was the elder daughter of Richard "Roy" and Emily Martin. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Harry A. Olson, son David Barclay Olson and sister Bonnie Lee Cupples. Carol resided in the Beckett Green Community in Owings Mills.

Carol graduated from Sharon Hill High School 1956, and the executive secretary program at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington Delaware 1958. She held several positions over the years, first as Secretary to the President of FMC Corporation and then as office manager and supervisor. Carol managed her husband's company, Maximum Potential, Inc, since it's founding in the late 1970's.

For over 30 years, Carol has been heavily active in her local congregation, Trinity Lutheran Church, Reisterstown. She sang in the choir and praise team, was Sunday School teacher for high school youth, conformation coordinator and program developer, started the Kids' Club, served as a wedding hostess and coordinated Seniors On The Move! She also served as President of the church council. At the Synod wide level, she held many offices, designed and managed programs, activities and retreats for the Maryland Synod Women of the ELCA, serving twice as the group's president. In recent years she also served on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Service arm of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in this region. Just this year, she assumed the new role of Thrivent's Coordinator of Congregational Advocates.

In her "spare" time, she founded a local Red Hat Chapter called "Lydia's Lids" (Lydia was the seller of purple who assisted St. Paul in the Book of Acts).

Carol was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to Barclay's 18 month old grandson Rain. Her passion was serving others, especially envisioning and organizing activities which one of her special gifts. She loved a challenge and frequently turned slumping activities into thriving ones through her diligence, compassion and love for the mission and the people involved.

At 71, she was still in her prime, and with Thrivent, just getting started. Her sudden and tragic death snuffed out her life when her flame was perhaps at its brightest, leaving her various "crews" without a "captain". She is sorely missed.
