Charles Louis Hammond Jr., 88, of Glyndon died Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Dove House, Carroll Hospice, from complications of heart disease.

Born in Reisterstown, he was the son of the late Mary Yellott Hammond and Charles Louis Hammond. He was the husband of Jeanne Wales Hammond, his wife of 61 years.

He enjoyed farming and raising dairy cows as a child and teenager. He was a dairy cattle judge and traveled around the country judging Holsteins. In 1939, he went to the World's Fair in San Francisco and was interviewed for the NBC radio network. Upon his return, he went to Baltimore for a weekend at the Hippodrome Theatre to demonstrate where milk came from.

He graduated from Franklin High School in Reisterstown in 1937. He pursued a career in baseball and tried out for the Orioles when they were part of the International League. He was a pitcher, but left baseball after injuring his arm.

He was in a Paratroop Ranger Outfit during World War II and was an officer in the First Special Services Force, also known as The Devil's Brigade. Two of the battles in which he participated were Anzio and Monte la Difensa. He also parachuted behind enemy lines and was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the leg when a bomb went off. He received seven battle stars and served in both the European and Japanese theatres.

Over the years, he had many roles, including office manager and senior buyer, at companies such as Suburban Propane, Groff and Sons, Dietrich Brothers, Ward Machinery, Fidelity Engineering and Singer/ Link division, from which he retired.

He was an avid Baltimore sports fan, especially the Orioles and Ravens.

He enjoyed farming, sports, gardening, and especially spending time with his family. He also enjoyed going to the Maryland State Fair, and won many first prizes for his dahlias.

He was a member of All Saints Church in Reisterstown, the American Contract Bridge League, and Historic Glyndon and Glyndon Community Association.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a brother, Howard Hardey Hammond of New Oxford, Pa.; sons Roy Wales Hammond of Glyndon, and James Dulany Hammond and wife Carol Dickinson of Westminster; daughter and son-in-law Joyce Monroe Patten and Steve Patten of Davidsonville; and grandsons Ryan James and Jason Scott Patten of Davidsonville.

He was predeceased by step-grandsons Daniel and Steven Schaeffer; and brothers Southgate Yellott Hammond and William D. Hammond.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills.
