Claude "Bud" Tilden Matthews, 96, of Hanover, PA, formerly of Hampstead, MD, died peacefully on October 30, 2021, at his home at Homewood at Plum Creek. Born on November 18, 1924, he was the son of the late Claude T. and Eurydice Schaffer Matthews. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia Newbell Matthews.
Having been born and raised in Hampstead, MD, he attended Hampstead High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1946. He served aboard 6 different destroyers as a Petty Officer First Class Radarman. He enjoyed recalling tales of life aboard ship and the many ports of call around the world. He proudly served his country at the end of WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars.
After retirement from the Navy in 1966, he spent many days enjoying his passion of Bass fishing and was a member of the North Carroll Bass Anglers. He enjoyed bus trips and summer vacations to Ocean City (while there he spent much time flounder fishing) and Myrtle Beach to spend time with family. He enjoyed his time volunteering at Homewood. He was a member of Hampstead American Legion Post 200 for 50 years. He attended Grace Bible Church in Manchester, MD. He was the first District Court Commissioner in Carroll County where he served for 5 years. He was employed as a salesman at Towne Pride Interiors in Hampstead for 28 years. After retirement, he and his wife who he loved dearly moved to Homewood at Plum Creek where they have resided for over 15 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his stepson: Mark Hare and wife Cindy, grandchildren: Sean Hare and wife Gina, Dr. Sarah Hare and companion Dr. Kelly Davis, and Serena Humphrey and husband William. He adored his great grandchildren: Jackson, Cody, and soon to arrive Baby Girl Hare, and Bailey Faye Humphrey. Also surviving is his stepson: Tim Hare and wife Lisa, grandchildren: Tyler, Olivia, and Kellie Hare, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters: Elanor Matthews Civish, Lavina Bunting Hancock, and Evelyn Stevenson, and brothers: J. Addison Matthews and Willard Matthews.
The family will receive visitors for a memorial gathering on Saturday, November 6, from 10:30 am – 12 pm at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102, where a memorial service will begin at 12 pm.
Interment is private.
