Daniel Christian Riley, Sr., age 91 of Manchester, Maryland, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2022, at Dove House, surrounded by family. He was born on the family farm in Manchester to the late John L. and Ruth E. Riley. He married Kathryn L. Riley (nee Shaffer) in October 1951, who preceded him in death in 2020 after 68 years of marriage. He was predeceased by his brother John A. Riley. He is survived by his brother-in-Law, Paul Shaffer, and wife Kitty of Hampstead and sister-in-law Dorothy G. Peddicord of Westminster. He was father to Thomas E. Riley, and his wife Deborah, Daniel C. (Chris). Riley, Jr and his wife Jamie. He was Grandfather to Brenden Riley, Daniel T. Riley and his wife Kassie, Allyson Gilberto and her late husband Anthony, and Christian Riley. Great Grandfather to Tristan and Declan. Proud uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Manchester High School in 1948 and served honorably in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He and his wife built their home on Grafton Street in 1955 where he lived until his death. He was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester, serving in various capacities over the years including Church Council President. He was employed as the first full time Manager for the Town of Manchester, overseeing the creation of Christmas Tree Park, tennis courts and sports fields. In the winter the tennis courts were flooded and used for ice skating. He later served on the town council for a number of terms and was the project manager for the Main Street renovation. Recently he volunteered his time working with the Town of Manchester Administrative offices. He retired from Hampstead Bank as a vice president and director. He worked extensively with the group who established the Manchester Historical Organization. He was always happy to lend a hand, answer a question or just listen.
He lived for his family and his commitment to helping others will long be remembered. His faith in God was unshakeable. He was a kind and gentle man who touched so many lives and inspired us all to be our better selves. The Lord has welcomed him home.
Viewing will be Wednesday, June 29 th from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102. A funeral service will be held, Thursday June 30 th , at 10AM also at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A.
Interment immediately following at the New Lutheran Cemetery.
