David Eugene Black Sr., 75, of Manchester, MD died Sunday Nov. 13, 2011 at the Transitions Healthcare in Sykesville.
Born August 10, 1936 in Manchester, he was the son of the late George Henry Black, Jr. and the late Gladys Bowman Black.
He was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was retired from the Carroll County Board of Education where he worked in general maintenance and previously was a driver for R. E. Berwager Livestock and Earl Smith Bus Service of Manchester. He was a life member of the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department for 52 years, where he had served as Chief, Assistant Chief and President. He was a life member of the Maryland State Fire Chiefs Association and had been President and vice President of the Carroll County Fire Chiefs Association and was a delegate for the County Fireman's Executive committee. He served on the Maryland State Fireman's Special Activities Committee. In 1983 he was elected to the Maryland State Fireman's Hall of Fame. In 1984 he was elected to the Carroll County Fireman's Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of the Lineboro-Manchester Lions Club Humanitarian Award. He also served on the Manchester Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals.
He is survived by his sons: David E. Black, Jr. of Richmond, Va., Henry George Black of Manchester, and Douglas M. Black of Chicago, Ill.
He was predeceased by brothers William S. Black, Sr. and George Henry "Sonny" Black, III.
The family will receive friends 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Matthew S. Schenning officiating.
Interment will be in the New Lutheran Cemetery, Manchester.
