Dave was born June 3, 1936 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, one of seven children in the family of Matthias and Irene Bott, (nee Abicht). He grew up in LaCrosse, graduating from Thomas Aquinas High School. He served two years with the Army, primarily as a crane operator at Fort Belvoir, VA. He attended Charles County Community College and graduated from Upper Iowa University.

In 1962, he married Mary Langley. They had two sons, David Jr. and Richard. The family lived in Bryans Road, Maryland.

Dave's work life began with The Trane Company. His apprenticeship at the Indian Head Naval Ordnance Station (NOS) developed into a career as a civil engineer for the U.S. Navy. After many years at NOS, he became the facilities manager at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Facility at Stump Neck. He was promoted again to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Alexandria, VA where he retired.

Dave was devoted to his family and his church. He was active in and often served as an officer for numerous organizations including St. Mary Star of the Sea School's Parent-Teachers' Guild, Boy Scouts, a variety of bowling leagues, Toastmasters International, the National Square Dance Convention, and the Knights of Columbus. During his retirement he assisted in the design, construction and funding of St. Bartholomew's new church. He spent many enjoyable hours with his family camping, playing games, square dancing, in his basement workshop building toys for his grandkids, and teaching them the fun of tinkering and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his eldest son David and wife Cindy, their daughters, Langley and Lily; his youngest son Richard and wife Dawn, their sons Ryder and Kelton; as well as three sisters, Mary Jane, Bernadette, Carol, and a brother, Richard. He was predeceased by his parents and his two older brothers, Thomas and Jerome.
