We are sad to announce that on Saturday November 13,2021 the matriarch of Genova's family restaurants passed away peacefully at UPMC Hanover Hospital.
Born Filippa(Carmelina) Genova Conigliaro on April 21,1942 in Carini, Sicily, Italy. She married her husband, Salvatore Marciano, on February 2, 1962 in the same town they both were born and raised in. Together they raised a family of four and in 1974 emigrated to the United States.
Two years later, in 1976, husband and wife opened their first restaurant in Hanover, Pennsylvania. In honor of his wife the restaurant was named Genova's Pizza. They soon opened multiple locations in southern Pennsylvania and in 1984 made the move to Hampstead, Maryland. Genova's quickly became known for their delicious bread, pizza dough and tomato sauce. From the beginning they stressed "It's all About the Bread". So much so that the 3rd generation of family to own and operate Genova's To Go still keeps to the tradition and the slogan.
Carmelina worked behind the scenes in the restaurants and front and center at home raising two sons, two daughters and later she was "Nonna" to 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Aside from God and family her passion was food. She never met a person she did not feed.
Carmelina is preceded in death by her husband, Salvatore Marciano. She is survived by her four children and in laws, Vita and Darryl Chesney, Frank and Piera Marciano, Giulio and Ashley Marciano and Bill and Josephine Knobloch. She is survived by her sister Vita Moceri from Warren, Michigan. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Salvatore and Whitney Marciano, Gianfranco Marciano, Milena Marciano engaged to Aaron Warnick, Christian Marciano engaged to Kathryn Kelley, Elise Knobloch, Jordan Marciano, Andrew Knobloch, Laura Knobloch and Lucas Marciano. In addition, she is survived by one great grandchild, Max Marciano.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102. A Requiem Mass will be held November 17,2021 at 11:00 am at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Rd Hanover, PA 17331.
