Francis Lothrop "Frank" "The Whistler" Harbin, of Hampstead, died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Hampstead.

Born Jan. 8, 1922, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Frank P. and Corrine L. Harbin. He was the husband of the late Clara Marie Dufault Harbin, his wife of 57 years.

He was a 1940 graduate of Calvert Hall College, where he played baseball and football. He met his wife while stationed in the Yakima Valley of Washington for advanced training in the Army.

He served in the Fifth Armored Division of Patton's Third Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Captain while participating in the liberation of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, and Germany.

He was a member of St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church in Manchester.

He enjoyed music, especially the Big Band sound, genealogy, telling stories, traveling around the United States, and his great-grandchildren. Interested in the engineering of HVAC systems, he worked for several companies in Philadelphia and Baltimore, ran his own business for many years, and ended his career as a VOC teacher for 10 years in Howard County.

He was the first and last surviving of five children.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Paul F. Harbin, of Albuquerque, N.M., Steven L. and Susan M. Harbin, of Westminster, Michael C. and Denise A. Harbin, of Williamsburg, Va., and Edwin L. and Susan C. Harbin, of Gettysburg, Pa.; a daughter, Mary Beth Harbin, of Frederick; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester.

A requiem Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, 3701 Park Ave., Manchester, with the Rev. Michael Roach officiating.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.
