Garland Dennis Shaw, Sr.

On September 11, 2026 Garland “Pop” Dennis Shaw Sr. peacefully passed away at his home in Lineboro, Maryland surrounded by his loving family.

Garland was born to Garland Fletcher Shaw and Cynthia Bowes Shaw in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania on February 24, 1939. In 1945 he moved to Maryland with his mother and sister while his father served in the war.

After graduating from Kenwood High School, Garland joined the United States Army where he served his country for several years. After the Army, he started his career at Kelly Pontiac as a mechanic. He later moved on to the Baltimore Sun where he eventually worked his way up to head mechanic. Garland happily retired from the Sun in 2002. But his favorite job throughout his journey was being “Pop”. He was loved and cherished by many who were fortunate enough to call him Pop, regardless of whether or not you were one of his own.

In 1966, Garland married the love of his life Marita Leary Shaw and cherished the 59 years they spent together until her passing last summer.

Garland was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing from his pontoon boat. He enjoyed camping and coaching/cheering on his children and eventually his grandchildren in any sport they participated in.

Garland is survived by his daughter Alicia Shaw, and his sons Denny (Lori) Shaw, and Cameron (Donora) Shaw. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marita and his two daughters Mimi and Hilary. Garland also leaves behind grandsons, Nicholas Notarangelo; Alejandro, Joshua, Noah (Zahary) Najarro; Samuel (Tatum) Shaw, Killian Shaw, and granddaughter Merrin Shaw. He recently went on to become a great grandfather, leaving behind great-granddaughter Zoey Najarro and soon to be great-grandson Baby Boy Shaw.

Garland was predeceased by his sister Sandra McNeal and is survived by his brother Kerry (Marsha) Shaw.

Garland was a man with great patience, absolute loyalty, and enjoyed telling a good story. For those of you who knew him his favorite saying was “Can’t dance and it is too wet to plow”. We find comfort in knowing he is now in heaven and is dancing with his beloved Marita.

A celebration of life will be held for Garland at a later date.
