George Verlie Hooper, 83, of Manchester, died Friday March 9, 2012 at Longview Nursing Home in Manchester, MD.
Born April 5, 1928 in Robbinsville, North Carolina he was the son of the late Rev. Thurman and Ellen Stewart Hooper. He was the husband of Ethel Yingling Hooper his wife of 61 years.
He was in the construction business, having owned and operated G.V. Hooper, Inc. and Maryland Recycling and Rehandling Corp. He was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manchester where he had served on the church council and property committees.
He was a volunteer at Charlotte's Quest Nature Center in Manchester, MD. He also enjoyed working in his garden, playing cards and dominoes with friends and family.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children Ellen Stickles and husband John of Millers, and Wayne Hooper and wife Donna of Hanover, PA; a brother Kelly Hooper of Robbinsville, NC; his brother-in-law Maurice Yingling and wife A. Ruth of Hampstead; his grandchildren Amy Secor and husband Michael, and great grandson Ryan Secor; Matthew Smith and wife Amie, Andrea Smith, Jay Stickles and wife Stephanie, and John Stickles, Jr. and wife Kathy; and his great grandchildren Kyle, Savannah, Coyote and Yonahga.
He was predeceased by his sisters Grace Waldroup, Margie Hollifield, Mary Jane Davis, Estelle Hooper, Ethel Gunnels, Lena Smith, and his brothers Arnold and Ben Hooper.
The family will receive friends 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester and from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of funeral service at11 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3184 Church Street, Manchester with his pastors the Revs. Matthew S. and Norma L. Schenning officiating.
Interment will be in New Lutheran Cemetery, Manchester.
