Gilbert Silas "Si" Benson, 90, of Reisterstown, died February 12, 2012 at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster.
Born August 11, 1921, in Boring, he was the son of the late Wilbur Markland Benson and Marie King Benson. He was the husband of Jane Sanders Benson, his wife of 64 years.
In addition to his wife, his four children, and his five grandchildren: Sande Dyott and her husband Bill of Annapolis and their son Jeff Somers of Arnold; Steve Benson, his wife Celia, and their son Luke Benson of Baltimore; Tom Benson, his wife Michelle Marozik, and their son Otto Benson of Brooklyn, NY; and Bryan Benson, his wife Sue and their daughters Emily and Grace Benson of Glyndon. He is also survived by his sister, Bernardine Walker. He was pre-deceased by his infant son, Michael and his sister Mary Ellen.
Si worked for Baltimore County for over 37 years, retiring in 1985 as Chief of the Bureau of Public Services, which he helped create, and Chair of the County's Review Group Subdivision Planning Committee. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Reisterstown all his life, and was a devoted congregant, serving on the property and cemetery committees.
An avid train collector and hobbyist, Si was one of four men who developed the Christmas train garden at Kennilworth Mall. Si's particular specialty was designing and building animations. He was a member of the Train Collectors Association and the Kiwanis of Reisterstown.
He graduated from Franklin High School in 1940 and attended North Carolina State University, becoming a professional civil engineer and landscape architect. In 1942, working in the chemistry lab at Rustless Iron and Steel Corporation, he helped the company win the Army-Navy E Award for "Production of Materiel Vital to the Successful Conduct of the War."
The family will receive friends from on Thursday, February 16th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Rd., Owings Mills, MD, 21117, and on Friday, February 17th at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Pleasant Grove is located at 15300 Dover Rd., Reisterstown, MD, 21136.
Interment will be at Pleasant Grove.
