Gladys Louise Hamm Britt Hatcher, 88, of Sykesville, formerly of Annapolis and Westminster, died January 12, 2009 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born on March 8, 1920 in Wilson, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Carl Hamm and Lilly Howell Hamm. She was the wife of the late Thell W. Britt and the late Rev. Clifford Hatcher, pastor of Community Bible Church in Annapolis for 50 years.

Mrs. Hatcher was a nurse for the Rosewood Center in Owings Mills for 20 years and president of the Nurses Association for 2 years.

She was a poet and was presented with Florence Nightingale Awards in Baltimore in 1975 by poet Lauretta Vincent Godfrey Burns for a poem titled, The Nurses Prayer.

She wrote, directed, and presented programs for her church for the organist, played the piano and accordion and was member of the church since 1966.

She was a member since 1954 of the Maryland Classified Employers Association and served as the Secretary of the Rosewood Chapter for 3 years.

She worked with Child Evangelism as a teacher of Bible to many children in Annapolis, in her home, and open the air volunteer for nursing homes playing piano and talking with residence, people were very important in her life.

Surviving are her daughter and son in law Thelma and Gilbert Norwood of Glen Rock, PA, her son and daughter in law Robert, Sr. and Margaret Britt of Westminster, her sisters Kathleen Speight and Pauline Mosley both of Rocky Mount, NC, her 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, and by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester. Interment will be in Mt. Paran Church Cemetery in Randallstown.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
