Hannah Vera Stevens, 88, of Westminster died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster.

Born April 27, 1922 in Baltimore, She was the daughter of the late Lawrence S. Stevens and Isabel Jacquette Stevens.

She was a 1940 graduate of Western High School. She graduated from the University of MD, College Park with a bachelor Degree in Physical Education and later received her Master Degree in Sociology from Wellesley College.

She was very athletic and played various sports throughout junior high and high school where she received many letter, metals, and certificates. She was active in her church where she sang in the choir and led the youth groups. In addition she enjoyed girl scouting and was the patrol leader. In her spare time she enjoyed reading.

After graduation from college she taught physical education for the Baltimore City Public Schools.
Then, she went to work for the Y.W.C.A. in Baltimore, where she was promoted to Executive Director of the Boston Y.W.C.A. and worked for 13 years. She then transferred to the Wilmington Y.W.C.A., then to the Cincinnati Y.W.C.A. and final to the Tidewater, VA Area Y.W.C.A., from which she retired.

After retiring, she moved back to Hampstead with her mother and became very active in the Volunteer Fire Department where she loved working in various capacities. She was also a member of the Women's Club of Hampstead for many years and she held many club offices as well as many district and state offices. After her mother died she moved to Carroll Lutheran Village where she was active.

Surviving is her sister Ann Stevens Garman of Westminster; a niece Priscilla Ellrich of Sykesville; her nephews Robert Garman of Howard Co, Gary Garman of Crownsville, and Charles Garman of Towson; and 9 great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. Thursday until time of funeral service at 7 p.m. at Krug Chapel in the Carroll Lutheran Village with the Rev. Jimmie L. Schwartz officiating. Interment will be 12 noon Friday at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Lutheran Village, C/O The Residence Assistance Fund, 300 St. Luke's Circle, Westminster, MD 21158.
