Jeanne Dieffenbach Smith, 89, of Westminster formerly of Salisbury died Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster.

Born May 21, 1922 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Otto W. Dieffenbach and Madeleine Louise Gilbert Dieffenbach. She was the wife of Benjamin G. Smith, her husband of 67 years.

She was a graduate of Girls Latin School, class of 1940 and the former Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College, class of 1944. She was retired from the Department of Social Services for the State of Maryland. She was an avid Girl Scout as a teenager and had a fondness for bridge and golf as an adult.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her children Carol S. Mulligan of Sparks, Michael P. Smith of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Anne H. Smith of Tampa, Fla.; and her brother Otto W. Dieffenbach, Jr., of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

She was predeceased by her brothers Rex A. Dieffenbach and Gordon G. Powers; and her sister Helen D. Smith.

A private cremation was held at All Faiths Crematory and Chapel, Manchester with a private interment in Krider's Church Cemetery.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Krug Chapel, Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster with Rev. Jimmie L. Schwartz officiating.
