John Joseph Ernest, III, 60, of Mt. Airy formerly of West Inverness died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA.

Born July 16, 1950 in Baltimore, he was the son of Clara Rose Adams Ernest and the late John Joseph Ernest, Jr. He was the husband of Nancy Lee Bowen Ernest, his wife of 40 years.

He was a member and Lay Minister at the Faith Lutheran Church. He had retired from Verizon as an upper level manager.

He was veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a Seabee. He was a 1968 graduate of Patapsco High School. He was scouted out of high school to pitch for the Washington Senators.

He was an avid bowler headed for the pro tour when he was sided lined by an injury. He was instrumental in starting the preschool at Faith Lutheran Church.

He volunteered in the library at Carroll Christian School and also worked as substitute teacher. He enjoyed coaching baseball for Middle River and Carroll Christian School Little League baseball programs.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are his children and spouse Jennifer Jaine and Sean Rhine, John Joseph Ernest, IV, Caitlin Elizabeth Ernest, and Gabrielle "Molly" Ernest; his brothers Wayne and Lesley Ernest; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Robert and Myrtle Bowen; his sister-in-law Susan Lupo; and his grandsons Sean and Kyle.

The family will receive friends 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills with a funeral service at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, 1700 Saint Andrews Way, Sykesville with his pastor the Rev. James M. Krach officiating.

Interment will be in the Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery in Owings Mills.
