John Stewart Newman, 81, of Manchester died January 7, 2009 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born August 4, 1927 in Carroll Co. MD, he was the son of the late Wilmer Bailey Newman and Mabel Irene Bankert Newman. He was the husband of Mary Jane Bair Newman, his wife of 59 years.

Mr. Newman was with Maryland banking for 23 years and President of Hampstead Bank. Prior to this, he was the store Manager of Sievert's Grocery Store in Manchester. He served in the United States Army in Panama and was life member of VFW in Littlestown, PA. He was member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester where he had been a member of the church council. He was member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and Elks 763 both in Hanover, PA.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughters and son-in- law Brenda Newman Wright of North Carolina and Janel K. and Tex Hargest of Hanover, PA, his grandchildren Jeremy, Justin, Sarah, Lauren, and Eric.

He is also survived by his brother Herman Leroy Newman of Connecticut, formerly of Littlestown, PA.

A funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester with Rev. Matthew Schenning officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hanover.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral chapel.
