Joseph Anthony Ritz, Sr, 86 of Owings Mills, MD died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Franklin Square Hospital.

Born August 12, 1922 in Wilkes Barre, PA, he was the son of the late Frank and Helen Ritz.

He was the husband of Irene A. Ritz, who died April 2, 1985.

He proudly served in the highly decorated 412th Thunderbolt-Fighter Squadron, 373rd Fighter Group of the 9th Army Air Force in Europe in World War II. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Owings Mills Post #521

He was visionary in organizing reunions for the 412th Fighter Squadron and for the Teamsters Local Union 590 Retirees Club.

He owned and operated his own service station, as well as working as a mechanic for Montgomery Ward.

As an incidental member of the civil rights movement he served as Secretary-Treasurer, along with many other senior positions, of the Teamsters Local 590 in Baltimore, MD for many years.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law; Joe Jr & Sue Ritz of Emmitsburg, MD; Fred & Joyce Ritz of Spring Grove, PA; Tom Ritz of Owings Mills, MD and Herb & Dodi Ritz of Manchester, MD; and grandchildren, Joe III, Elizabeth, Sophie, Alma, Ashley, Zachary & Jeremy and step-grandchildren, Alaina & Kate; sister & brother-in-law; Rita & Norman Sahlit of Delaware, brothers & sisters-in-law; Ernie & Joan Ritz of New Jersey; Charlie & Gert Ritz of Baltimore, MD and brother-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and devoted companion Olive Sauter, Baltimore, MD .

He was predeceased by brothers, Harry, Ed, Frank, Jerry and Jack Ritz and sister, Helen Davis.

A Mass Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 65 Sacred Heart Lane,Glyndon, MD at 10:00 am on Friday, December 5, 2008.

Interment with military honors in Druid Ridge Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 on Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills.
