Joseph Irwin Schwartz, 74, of Sykesville formerly of Ellicott City died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia.

Born February 3, 1936 in Irvington, he was the son of the late Joseph Irvin Schwartz and Doris Kornmann West. He was the husband of Carol Ann Evans Schwartz, his wife of 50 years, with whom he celebrated an anniversary on June 4, 2010.

He was a mechanical engineer with the Department of the Navy for 33 years in research and development. He was a visiting associate professor of 1 year from 1981 to 1982 at the United States Naval Academy. He was a veteran of the Maryland Army National Guard where he served for 6 years.

He was a 1954 graduate of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and a 1959 graduate of the University of Maryland.

He was a member of Gary Memorial United Methodist Church and a former member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church for 56 years and served as a lay speaker on various occasions.

He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Monumental Rifle and Pistol Club, and an associate member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association.

In his spare time, he enjoyed train collecting and model railroading, playing golf, scuba diving, driving his red convertible mustang and was an avid reader. In addition, he enjoyed listening to his short wave radio, playing his guitar, working with his computers and in his early days he enjoyed softball. He was an awarding winning amateur photographer. He often entered photos at the annual Howard County Fair and even won an award for a national photography contest sponsored by the Department of the Navy.

He will always be remembered for his straight forward thoughts and his high moral compass. Furthermore, he will be forever remembered for always having a good joke and a quick wit about himself. These were often regarded as "Uncle Joe-isms".

Surviving in addition to his wife is his brother and sister in law Tom and Sharon Schwartz of Sykesville; a brother in law Clyde Friddle of West Virginia; his nieces and nephews David and Michele Geiman, Michael and Mary Geiman, Daniel and Shelly Geiman, Debbie and Frank Rice, James and Michele Schwartz, Beth and Cody Plog, Scott and Sharon Lange, and Russ Lange; and also survived by numerous great nieces, great nephews, one great great niece, numerous cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by a sister Janice Schwartz Geiman Friddle and a brother in law and sister in law Bob and June Lange.

The family will receive friends 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills where a funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday with his pastor the Rev. Tim Kromer officiating.

Interment will be in the Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville.
