Joseph Henry Shrader, 81, of Hampstead died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born on August 22, 1928 in Keyser, WV, he was the son of the late Stanley Gordon Shrader and Marie Lena Spade Shrader. He was the husband of the late Helen Virginia Schoonover Shrader, his wife of 53 years, who died in 2005.

He was retired from the United States Navy as a Gunners Mate Senior Chief with 23 years of service and also retired from Baltimore Spice Company as a mechanic. He had worked for AAI as a fork lift mechanic.

He is a life member of the Dug Hill Gun Club and the Great American Hunting Club. He had served on the board for Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery Advisory Committee, as well as serving as President of the Fleet Reserve Association, Baltimore Branch 6 and secretary of the AA branch at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was an outstanding member of the V.F.W. and American Legion.

Surviving are his children and their spouses Vivian and Dominic Palmerino of Hampstead, Wade and Janet Shrader of Westminster, and James Dale Shrader of Hampstead; his grandchildren Joseph and his wife Jill, Nicholas, Michelle and Jennifer; his great grandchildren Nicholas Ray, II, Mya Paige, Anthony Joseph, and Vincent Martin; his brother in law Carl W. Schoonover of Parsons, WV; his nieces and nephews Nancy, Phyllis, Jack, Tom, John, Carl, Glen, Susy, Billy, Leatha, Pat, Kathy, Janet, Michael, and numerous other relatives.

The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester where a funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. follow by a Fleet Reserve Association Baltimore Branch 6 Service at 6:30 p.m.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dove House, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157.
