Kenneth Earl Mays, 96, of Hanover, PA, passed away on February 17, 2018. Son of the late William Henry Mays and Annie Mabel (Turnbaugh) Mays, Kenneth was born on December 21, 1921, in Parkton, MD.
From a young age, Kenneth helped his father on the family farm, which instilled his love for the land.
He is survived by his wife: Janice Ward Mays, his brother: Robert Mays of Shrewsbury, PA, children: Carole Mays, Jeanne Mays, Jeffery Huster, and Stephen Huster, grandchildren: Amy Caplan and Greg Huster and their spouses, and three great-grandchildren.
A graduate of Sparks School, Kenneth attended Towson State Normal School and earned his master's degree from the University of Maryland. Upon graduation, he was a classroom teacher before accepting a principal position in Carroll County, MD. Then, moving on to Baltimore County Public Schools, he served as the principal of Franklin, Rosedale and Loch Raven Elementary Schools before retiring. He and Janice built a house in Taneytown, MD, and traveled widely. Enjoying working with his hands, Kenneth restored a 1929 Chevrolet truck, made wooden furniture and carvings, among his other pursuits.
His life, rich in friends, former students and colleagues was punctuated by his community leadership and accomplishments. Kenneth will be remembered by the wonderful stories of growing up in the early 20th century that he wrote and shared with all who knew him.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, February 20, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102. Funeral services and interment will be private.
