Listen to Obituary

Lawrence Whitney died peacefully on February 7, 2022 at Homewood in Hanover, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Alvin and Gertrude Whitney, born on September 7, 1928.

He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Mary Ellen Reese, the love of his life. He had 8 brothers and sisters, all of whom are deceased.

He is survived by one son: Dr. Larry Whitney, Jr. and his wife Carolyn from Hanover, PA, 2 grandchildren: Dinyee Rinker and husband Brad from Orange County, California, and Dr. Larry Whitney III and wife Lindsay from Tampa, Florida, 4 wonderful great-grandchildren: Mikayla Rinker, Bella Whitney, Kaitlyn Whitney and Braden Lawrence Whitney, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Orphaned at 14, he joined the Army at age 17 and was sent to Germany at the end of WWII. Returning home from the war, he got married and worked at getting his education, eventually receiving his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Theology. He served as a Lay Pastor until 1966 when he became ordained by The Church of God and became a full time Pastor. Moving up the "ranks", with God's help and his very talented wife, they eventually pastored the largest Church of God in the northeast with his services carried on 3 TV stations. He loved to tell the success story of an orphan coming from nothing being used by God to have a very dynamic ministry reaching and changing thousands of lives for the better.

His love of family, positive attitude and sense of humor will be sorely missed!

Due to ongoing Covid issues and travel distance, burial will be private, with a memorial service in the summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Homewood at Plum Creek, Benevolent Site Fund, 425 Westminster Road, Hanover, PA 17331.

Arrangements are by the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., Manchester, MD.
