Margaret "Rita" Hughes

Margaret "Rita" Hughes, 81, of Hampstead, MD., passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at her residence. Born on April 4, 1936 in County Leitrim, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Rebecca Garrahy. She was the wife of the late Patrick Joseph Hughes.

Surviving her is her daughter: Katherine "Kathy" Hughes of Hampstead, MD., brother: Noel Garrahy of Ireland, grandson: Conor Hughes of Sumter, South Carolina and several nieces.

She was predeceased by a son: Ronan Michael Hughes.

Rita was an administrative assistant in the Arts Division of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission for many years.

Rita was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was a gifted knitter who loved to make beautiful sweaters, especially for babies and small children, always donating her time and talent.

The family will receive friends on Thursday May 11, 2017 from 3-5 and 7-9 pm. at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A. 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102. There will be a brief prayer service given by her LAOH Sisters at 7:30pm. at the funeral chapel. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00am. at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, 2930 Hanover Pike, Manchester, MD 21102. Interment to follow in New Lutheran Cemetery, Manchester, MD.
