Mary Lee Schmall, who passed on March 6, 2025 at Brightview Assisted Living in Westminster, was born on February 8, 1933 as Mary Lee Younger, second daughter of Elmer and Mary Younger of Baltimore with an older sister, Norma. Her parents later moved to Glyndon, Maryland. She graduated from Western Maryland College in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in biology and worked as a laboratory technician at Johns Hopkins Hospital until 1958. She married Craig N. Schmall of Reisterstown, Maryland in January 1958 after meeting at Western Maryland and Craig returned from active duty Army service in South Korea. The two lived in Chicago, Illinois from 1958 to 1961 where her husband attended the National College of Chiropractic, and Mary Lee supported them as a laboratory technician at the Cook County Hospital in 1958 and then Presbyterian Hospital from 1958 to 1961. Mary Lee and Craig in 1961 moved to Westminster, Maryland in a house they have owned for over 60 years. In 1962 their only child, Craig R. Schmall, was born. As Dr. Schmall started his chiropractic practice in Westminster, Mary Lee began her career in 1963 as a biology lab instructor at Western Maryland College, where she worked for 44 years. She was very proud of her numerous students who went on to careers in medicine and also proud of vexing lazy students with her high standards. Mary Lee was a trained pianist and organist and she spent decades playing the organ at her church, Ascension Episcopal in Westminster, as well as a pianist for Theatre on the Hill and September Song music theaters. She also served as a piano accompanist to numerous young musicians and vocalists.
Mary Lee's other interests included traveling to Bermuda and Europe, working on a large dollhouse replica of her home, Dobermans, family genealogy, and antiques. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists, The Association of Biology Laboratory Educators, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Mount Vernon Association.
Mary Lee's husband Craig passed in 2004 and she is survived by son Craig R. and his wife, Rika, of Falls Church, Virginia. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews and their children.
