Dr. Nilo S. Faria age 90 of Reisterstown, MD. died Tuesday March 23, 2010 at the Seasons Hospice in Randallstown, MD.
Born Sept. 26, 1919 in Santa Clara, Cuba he was the son of the late Santos and Felicitas Rodriguez Faria.
He was the husband of Migdalia Faria his wife of 55 years.
He was a retired teacher and Instructor at the Gilman School where he worked from 1972-1985. He was a 1938 graduate of Mt. St. Joe and the Havana University Class of 1947. He attended Johns Hopkins University.
On Dec. 18, 1962 he was arrested in Cuba and was a political prisoner under Castro for anti Castro propaganda, raising hands against the regime. He was also helping Cubans escape from his beach house. While in prison he lost 60 pounds. He was freed from prison on Dec. 18, 1967 after his release from prison he spent 10 months in a concentration camp cleaning sugar cane until he left Cuba Oct. 22, 1968. He came to the United States Sept. 11, 1969.
He was a teacher and Instructor for the Maine University from 1969-1970 and the Ricker College in Maine from 1970-1972 and the Gilman School from 1972-1985. He was very proud of his grandson Henry who was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and who served two tours in Iraq. He is also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glyndon, MD.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters: Felicitas Russell and her husband Thaddeus and Migdy Faria and grandchildren: Henry Russell, Nicole Bouchard, Anne and Paul Russell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 65 Sacred Heart Lane, Glyndon, MD. on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
Interment will be in Dulaney Valley Mem. Gardens, Timonium, MD.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9pm. at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel P.A. 11605 Reisterstown Rd. Owings Mills, MD.
