Paul Bystrak, 89, of Manchester died Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the Dove House in Westminster.

Born on July 27, 1920 in Sobotiste, Czechoslovakia (Slovakia), he was the son of the late Stephan Bystrak and Judith Hurbanek Bystrak. He was the husband of Amelia Zlock Bystrak, his wife of 64 years.

He immigrated to the United States in 1927 and was a graduate of Binghamton High School, class of 1938. He joined the United States Army in 1939 and served with the First Division, seeing action in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, France, being in the first wave at Omaha Beach, Belgium, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, and Germany.

In addition, he served in Korea prior to his retirement in 1963 at the rank Major having earned many awards and medals.

After retirement, he went to work for Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Linthicum until his second retirement in 1984. He enjoyed gardening, yard work, feeding the birds, as well as relating war stories to his grandchildren. He was a life member of the Society if the First Division.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his sons and daughters in law Paul and Linda Bystrak, Danny Bystrak and Barbara Anderson, and Steve and Pamela Bystrak; his daughter Colleen Abbott; his grandchildren and spouse Karl and Stephanie Bystrak, Will Abbott, Jennifer Abbott, Chelsea Bystrak and Rebekah Bystrak; and his brother and sister in law Rudolph and Barbara Bystrak.

He was predeceased by his brother John Bystrak.

A graveside service will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 17, 2010 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA with full Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to Dove House, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157.
