Raymond "Smitty" Eugene Smith

Raymond "Smitty" Eugene Smith, 94, of Hanover, PA, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, PA. Born on November 30, 1927, in Snydersburg, MD, he was the son of the late Carroll Clinton and Evelyn Reed Smith. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Brown Smith, who passed away on December 12, 2020. Smitty and Dot resided on Clearview Avenue in Hampstead, MD for 55 years, prior to making his home at Homewood at Plum Creek in May of 2010.

Smitty was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. For 35 years, he worked as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Hampstead, MD. He worked part time from 1943 to 2004 as a clerk of public auctions at Snyder's Auction. He was a life time member of the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company as well as a member of the fire company's Hall of Fame. Smitty held offices of president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer for the annual carnival for many years. He was also the treasurer of ambulance solicitation committee for more than 25 years. He was a member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ in Snydersburg since 1941. He was a member of the National and Maryland Rural Letter Carrier's Association. He was a former volunteer for meals on wheels, the Carroll Hospital Center, and worked with the Hampstead Little League and Pony League. Smitty was also a former minor league scout for the Baltimore Orioles.

Surviving him is son: Donald Smith and wife Mary.

He was predeceased by his brother: Ralph L. Smith.

The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, December 22, from 11 am – 1 pm at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102, where a funeral service will begin at 1 pm, with Reverend Scott Sager officiating.

Interment to follow in St. Marks Church Cemetery, Snydersburg, MD.
