Robert Bruce Ackerman, Sr.

Robert Bruce Ackerman, Sr., 78, of Reisterstown, MD, passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at his home. Born on July 10, 1943 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Gilbert Donaldson and her husband Melvin. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Barbara Ellen Brown Ackerman.

Bob retired as a Sergeant from the Baltimore City Police Department. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served many years as a Eucharistic Minister. Bob enjoyed music, playing guitar with his son, carpentry, and coaching and watching youth basketball and baseball.

Bob loved all things baseball. In his younger years, he played in the Minor Leagues for the Houston Colt .45s and San Francisco Giants. The Towson Catholic High School inducted him into the Hall of Fame for Athletes. After retirement, he was a pitching coach for McDaniel College, a coach for the Oriolelanders, and participated in the Cal Ripken Baseball Camp for many years. He was a member of the Old Timers Baseball Association and Baltimore Boys of Summer.

Surviving him in addition to his wife are children: Robert Ackerman, Jr. and wife Lisa, James Ackerman and wife Heather, and Elizabeth Ackerman, grandchildren: Robby, Karen, Jordan, Aubrey, Carson, Ben, Hadassah, and Deborah, and siblings: Shirl, Michael, Linda, Vickie, and Darlene. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter: Sheila Ackerman, niece: Stephanie Lang, father: Bruce Ackerman, and brother: Steve.

The family will receive visitors for a memorial gathering on Sunday, August 15 from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 16 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 63 Sacred Heart Lane, Glyndon, MD.

Interment is private.
