Sandra Camilla Barnes, 90, of Reisterstown, MD, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024, at BridgingLife Dove House in Westminster, Maryland. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Alexander and Gudrun Syvertsen Novotny. She was the beloved wife of Robert "Bob" Rider Barnes.
Sandra served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1956. She was a graduate of the University of Maryland (1967) and George Washington University (1977).
She enjoyed a thirty-year career as an education specialist in the voluntary education programs offered to service members aboard military installations. Her assignments included positions in education centers on Marine Corps, Air Force, and Navy bases.
Sandra was a "plank owner" in the establishment of the Navy Campus for Achievement (NCFA) in 1974. At the time of her retirement, she was the Northeast Area Manager responsible for Navy Campus Education Centers on fourteen Navy installations.
Sandra was a passionate animal lover. She was an advocate for education to enrich life both personally and professionally. Most importantly she was fiercely determined to excel in all she attempted to achieve. Her absence is keenly felt but she remains forever present in our hearts, a beloved wife, mother, and friend.
Surviving her in addition to her husband are daughters: Diane Graiss (husband Gamal), Debra Klaben (husband Gary) and Jennifer DeMaro (husband Doug), grandchildren: Sarah Komm, John Klaben, Casey Reigelsperger, and Matthew DeMaro, and great grandchildren: Ethan Komm, Sullivan Klaben and Gabrielle Klaben.
Funeral services and interment are private.
