Sarah Hinkle Warner, 87, formerly of Fairfax, Virginia, died June 15 at Carroll Lutheran Village, where she had been a resident since 2021.
Sarah was born on June 10, 1939 in Moorefield, WV to the late John Ray Hinkle and Nellie (Mauzy) Hinkle, during their years of traveling in a house trailer and doing evangelistic ministry.
Her family settled in Dayton, VA where she attended the Dayton School from first through eleventh grade. She was part of the first graduating class of Turner Ashby High School in 1957. Growing up across the street from Shenandoah Conservatory fostered her lifelong love of music and provided piano and voice teachers during her formative years.
After graduating from Asbury College (now University) with a double major in Mathematics and History, Sarah began her teaching career in the Roanoke City School System. Through a grant provided by the National Science Foundation, she obtained a masters degree in Mathematics from the University of South Carolina. Sarah then went on to teach Mathematics for Fairfax County Public Schools for twelve years.
After initially meeting at Asbury College, she and Dan Warner reunited in Fairfax, VA more than a decade later, where they were both teaching at the time. On August 4, 1974 they were married and they made their home in Fairfax for the next 47 years.
In 1977, they welcomed a daughter, Becky, and Sarah embraced the role of stay-at-home mother. Sarah tutored mathematics from their home for more than 25 years and discovered the joy of providing one-on-one instruction. This allowed her to be involved in volunteer work at church and at Becky’s schools.
Sarah placed her faith in Jesus at a young age and this strong faith guided her life. She and her family were a part of Pender United Methodist Church (Fairfax, VA) for 30 years. She was involved in the Missions Committee and served as chair for more than 10 years. She regularly helped with music programs, Vacation Bible School, and women’s ministry.
Sarah enjoyed cooking, reading, traveling, local history, and genealogy. She was quite active in the National Henckel Genealogical Association, including serving as an officer.
Her favorite role, however, was being grandma to Carolyne, Abigail, and Will. She was even willing to fly to China for her first granddaughter’s birth! Sarah loved spending time with her family and taught her granddaughters many things like how to use a sewing machine, and how to make pickles and grape jelly.
Sarah will be greatly missed! She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dan; a daughter, Becky Paschal and her husband, Joe, of Manchester, MD; grandchildren, Carolyne, Abigail and Will Paschal; nieces, Suzanne Hinkle, Elizabeth Hinkle, and nephew, Matthew Hinkle and his family, along with many cousins.
She is predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Dorothy Hinkle.
The Family will receive visitors on Friday, June 19 from 11:00-12:00 pm at Carroll Lutheran Village Krug Chapel, Westminster, MD. The funeral will be at 12:00pm, followed by a reception. There will also be a graveside service held on Saturday, June 20 at 1:00 pm at the Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, VA.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Bible Society (americanbible.org) or the Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org), two organizations that were special to her.
Arrangements are by the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., Manchester, MD.
