Shirley May Mercurio , 82, of Hampstead died Monday, December 21, 2009 at her residence.

Born on July 18, 1927 in Owings Mills, she was the daughter of the late Walter Gentz and Evelyn Minnie Hofmann Gentz. She was the wife of Vincent Mercurio her husband of 11 years.

She was a registered nurse and worked for many years at Howard County General Hospital. She was a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church and St. Abrahams Lutheran Church. She celebrated God's Grace through her love of songs and hymns of Glory.

She loved to play piano and for 8 years formally trained as a pianist at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore. She was an excellent gardener with a passion for cultivating flowers and vegetables.

She was a gentle soul who loved all God's creatures, especially her dogs Boomer and Peanut.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her daughters Carol Angelo and Deborah Amey; her step children Michael Mercurio and Dawn Mercurio; her grandchildren Kyle Amey, Kara Amey and Michael Burns and her sister Beverly Royer.

She was predeceased by her son James B. Sullivan
and her brother Walter Gentz, Jr.

The family will receive friends 12:00 P.M. Wednesday until time of funeral service at 1:00 P.M. at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester with her pastor Rev. George E. Tuttle officiating.

Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be offered to the Humane Society of Carroll County, 2517 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD 21158.
