Sisto Joseph Averno, Sr. 86 years old of Pikesville, died Monday, March 26, at the Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown.
Born May 12, 1925 in Paterson, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Roberto Averno and Elvira Isabella Salerno Averno.
He was the husband for 61 years of Margaret E. Meredith Averno.
He served honorably with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII.
He was a graduate of Muhlenberg College where he earned the recognition as a member of the Muhlenberg College Athletic Hall of Fame. He went on to play Professional Football with the Baltimore Colts in 1950,'53 and '54. In between he played with the 1951 New York Yanks football team and the 1952 Dallas Texans. As the final pick of the 1951 NFL Draft he was honored as that draft's Mr. Irrelevant. He was a member of the Italian American Hall of Fame. After his football career, he was a salesman for 57 years with both the Luby and Fox Chevrolet Dealerships in Baltimore.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children and their spouses: Kimberly and Stephen Noppenberger of Taneytown, Dina Averno of Pikesville, Gia and Charles Muth of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sisto Joseph Jr. and Amber Averno of Owings Mills, sister Dolores Tullo and her husband James of New Jersey and 7 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 65 Sacred Heart Lane, Glyndon.
Interment in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery.
