Stephen James Birckhead, Sr. age 85 of Reisterstown, MD. died Thursday Oct. 22,2009 at the Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, MD.
Born Oct. 13,1924 in Baltimore, MD. he was the son of the late John Thurman and Elisa Louisa Kalbskopf Birckhead. He was the husband of 59 years to Kathryn Marie Disney Birckhead.
He was a retired photo compositer. He was a WWII Navy veteran who served as a Naval electrician on the Carrier USS Santee. He was also one of the fortunate Americans to survive a Kamikazee attack on his ship in the Pacific Ocean. He was a founding member of the WWII memorial. He was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Reisterstown, MD. where he sang on the choir.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children: Deborah Birckhead of Reisterstown, MD.,Stephen Birckhead, Jr. of Reisterstown, MD., Bob Birckhead and wife Sue of Reisterstown, MD., Nancy Allen of Texas and Kathy Dorr and husband Ed of Hurlock, MD. Grandchildren: Jason, Adam, Jonathan, Matthew, Melissa, Robert, Eric, Stephen and one great grandchild: Dominick.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 109 Main St. Reisterstown, MD. on Monday at 9:00 am. with his pastor, Rev. Timothy Feaser officiating. Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD.
The family will receive friends at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel P.A. 11605 Reisterstown Rd. Owings Mills, MD.on Sunday from 3-5 and 7-9 pm.
