Listen to Obituary

Tanya Lippman Murray of Randallstown, Maryland, 78-years-old, passed away peacefully at Gilchrist Hospice, Towson, Maryland, on April 25, 2023, after a battle with bladder cancer. She was born on November 2, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and had fond memories of her childhood spent in Weeks Island, New Iberia, and Reserve, Louisiana. She graduated from Benton High School, Benton, Arkansas, and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Tennessee. She later married Ray Murray and relocated to the greater Baltimore/Washington D.C. area.

Tanya had a remarkable 53-year career as a dental hygienist, most notably for over 44 years with Dr. Lawrence Whitney's dental practice in Hampstead, Maryland. She was highly respected for her professional excellence, caring, and vivacious personality. In 2021, she was honored by Carroll County's Northern News for her contributions as one "of the true giants in our community", adding "How can you begin to say thanks to a Tanya Murray who spent over 40 years in the healthcare industry serving thousands as a dental hygienist?"

Tanya was kind, generous, loving, and a supporter of the performing arts – from Broadway to classical symphony, opera, and dance.  At age 7, Tanya lost her mother to cancer. Her mother's connection to the arts inspired Tanya's appreciation and love for the performing and visual arts. Tanya tirelessly gave support as a hands-on volunteer for the performing and fine arts, including Lodiamo Opera Viva (LOV, formerly Lyric Opera Volunteers), in Baltimore, where she lived, and contributed to arts organizations in New York. As well as the performing arts, her wide-ranging interests included the fine arts, natural history, and the sciences.  She was a devoted member of many of the finest museums and galleries specializing in these interests in both New York and Baltimore. Tanya enjoyed a happy life in the company of a large circle of friends, while supporting, and sharing her passion for the arts.

Tanya cherished most the loving relationship with her daughter, Dr. Shannon Murray, and a wide circle of many dear friends including Patrick Albright; Mary and Charlie Gontkovic; and Marlene Lesley. Shannon wishes to thank her mother's many dear friends and family members who loved and supported Tanya over the years, especially during her illness.  Tanya is survived by her daughter, Dr. Shannon Murray; brother, Darryl Lippman and sister-in-law, Lynn Lippman; and her nieces and nephews, Karen Lippman Schneider, John Lippman, Marc Lippman, David Lippman and Beth Busbice. Preceding her in death were her former husband, Ray Murray; her parents, Alfred Lippman, Jr and Dorothy Kahn Lippman; brother Alfred S. Lippman and sister-in-law Gail Poche Lippman.

A Celebration of Life for Tanya will be held for family and friends on Saturday, June 3rd from 12-3 pm at the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department Activities Building, 3297 York St., Manchester, MD 21102.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that a donation be made in Tanya's memory to Smile Train or Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, or a charity of the donor's choice.

A second Celebration of Life for Tanya is planned in Louisiana, when Tanya will be interred with her mother in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Details will be announced later.

Arrangements are by the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., Manchester, MD.
