Thomas S. Gordon, age 89, of Westminster, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Carroll Hospice Dove House.
He was born on June 10, 1924 in Rochester NY, the son of Mack and Bessie Gordon. His mother died when he was the age of two and he was raised in Baltimore, MD by her sisters, Ada and Edith Straus.
He was the husband of the late Evelyn Gordon. They met during World War II at a USO dance in Milwaukee, WI and were married on May 30, 1946 in California. In 1948, they purchased Good Luck Farm in Carroll County where they raised Black Angus cattle.
He attended grade school in Baltimore, MD. He received his High School diploma from the Park School of Baltimore. He attended Ohio State University, the University of Maryland, and Western Maryland College.
As a boy he attained the rank of Life Scout and attended the first Boy Scout National Jamboree in Washington, DC in 1937. He attended the final joint reunion of Civil War veterans held at Gettysburg, PA. in 1938.
He served with the U.S. Navy amphibious forces in the South Pacific during WWII.
He was connoisseur of food and traveled extensively with his wife.
He loved to read, had an insatiable appetite for knowledge of history.
He enjoyed sports, hunting , was a Little League coach and a 4-H advisor .
He was employed by the Farm Bureau, and worked in advertising at Black and Decker. He was a member of the Angus Association, Farm Planning Group of Carroll County, MD , Lion's Club, VFW, and Landing Craft Infantry Association of WWII.
He took an active part in research with Maryland Historical Society and served as a member of the Carroll County Civil War Centennial Commission.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Thomas S. Gordon, Jr. and Carolyn of Westminster and two grandchildren, Thomas S. Gordon III and wife Brianna of Westminster, and Carrie and husband Richmond Goughneour of Rock Hill, SC.
He was predeceased by his sister, Paula Hannah, and his brother, Mack Gordon.
The family will receive friends from 3-5pm and 7-9pm on Sunday June 23 at Eckhart Funeral Chapel at 3296 Charmil Drive in Manchester. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 1:00 pm at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Michael C. Adams officiating.
