Virginia Lee Heiliger (Proutt), age 95 of Manchester, MD died Saturday Jan. 30, 2016 at the Memorial Hospital in York, PA. Born Feb. 28, 1920 in South Baltimore City, she was the daughter of the late Earl Leroy and Nora Perkins Proutt. She was the beloved wife of the late John Walter Heiliger who died 14 years before her.
At the age of 16 she quit school to help support her family during the years of the Depression. She married her late husband on Dec. 13, 1937 and was married to him for 64 years. After her husband served in World War II, they moved to Carroll County, MD and later bought an old farm near Manchester, MD where they enjoyed living for 41 years. During the 1950's she fostered babies being put into adoption agencies. She fostered a young girl that she kept in touch with her entire life. Her hobbies were reading, sewing, and a 30 year long pen pal hobby. She cared for her husband in failing health for 8 years. The last 13 years of her life she lived beside her daughter's family, where she enjoyed care and visits from her children, grandchildren, nieces and friends. All of her life her faith in God sustained her.
She was a devoted mother of, Jacqueline Lee Baldwin of Taneytown, Walter LeRoy Heiliger of York, PA, and Christina Theresa Polkinghorne of York, PA., grandchildren, Tracey Santoro of MD, Scott Strzelczyk of MD, Jeffrey Strzelczyk of MD, Erin Ream of PA, Gregory Heiliger of PA, Jessica Heiliger of PA, James Polkinghorne of ND, Abigail Geib of ND, Elizabeth Polkinghorne of PA, Esther Geib of MT, and Mary Polkinghorne of PA, and 20 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday Feb. 4, 2016 at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL P.A. 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD from 11:00 A.M. with funeral services at 12:00 noon. Pastor James Polkinghorne will officiate.
Interment will be in the New Lutheran Cemetery, Manchester, MD.
