Virginia Bartlett Smart, 88, of Carmel, IN, and formerly of Lutherville, MD, peacefully accepted God's calling into his waiting arms and into eternal life on December 9, 2018. Born on August 2, 1930, in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late James Dixon Bartlett and Isabelle McCormick Bartlett. She was the loving wife of the late Lawrence F. Smart Sr.

Virginia, who was often referred to as Boopsie or Boo in her early years, was a 1948 graduate of Garrison Forest School, where she played tennis and field hockey. She went on to coach the field hockey team after graduation. Virginia's life was centered in music, where she began the volunteer choir at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and sang for 58 years. She volunteered weekly in food pantries. In addition, she enjoyed listening to operas on Saturday afternoons while completing jigsaw puzzles. Other enjoyments were her love for needlepoint, playing scrabble with family, and spending time at the beach.  She served on the church Altar Guild and was an active member of the Women's Club of Glyndon.  Before retiring she worked as the church secretary for St. Thomas Church.

She is survived by her six children: Lawrence F. Smart, Jr., Anthony Smart (Kathy), Virginia "Bartie" Kelly (Chris), Deborah Friedenberg (Rick), Amanda Cyncoski (Ed), and Lydia Williams (Roger). Two sisters survive: Mary Dixon Peers (Michael) and Elizabeth Hill (Joe). Virginia was affectionately known as Mama to her 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, December 13, from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 14, at 10 am at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 232 St. Thomas Lane, Owings Mills, MD 21117. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
