William "Bill" Ernest Gyr

William "Bill" Ernest Gyr, 83, of Reisterstown, MD, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023. Born on April 8, 1940 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Gustave L. Gyr and Margaret E. Briest Gyr. He was the beloved husband of 61 years to J. Carolyn Lang Gyr.

He received his Bachelors degree in Business Management from the University of Baltimore and a Certificate in Accounting from Johns Hopkins University. Bill was retired from a long career in business accounting and financial management as a controller and as an accounting supervisor. He volunteered as Treasurer and financial advisor for numerous groups and organizations. Until his last days he prepared tax forms for friends, family, and organizations he was affiliated with.

From his childhood throughout all his years, Bill was dedicated to living a good, gentle, and moral life. He was active in the Boy Scouts both as a member and as a leader. As a youth he was an active member of the Masonic youth group, the Order of DeMolay and went on to be named to the DeMolay Legion of Honor. He was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Maryland for more than 60 years. He was raised as a Master Mason in Tuscan Lodge No. 202 in Baltimore in 1962 and went on to serve as Worshipful Master of the lodge in 2000. He was a member of Ionic Lodge No. 145 in Reisterstown, and a charter member of Ancient Baltimore Lodge No. 234 in Baltimore. He was elected as the Grand Treasurer of Masons in Maryland in 2007, a position he would serve in for the following ten years. At the conclusion of his term he was named Right Worshipful Grand Treasurer Emeritus; a position he would hold for the rest of his life. Bill was a 33 ⁰ Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Knights Templar, and many other Masonic organizations including the Order of the Eastern Star in which he served as a Worthy Patron and of Job's Daughters International where he served as Associate Bethel Guardian. He was awarded the Warren Seipp Medal for Meritorious Service and the Thomas J. Shryock Medal for Distinguished Service.

Surviving him in addition to his wife is a daughter: Jennifer and husband Tom, granddaughters: Sophie and Samantha, and sister: Eleanor Gyr.

Bill was predeceased by his son: Charles "Chip" L. Gyr.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, May 5, from 3-5 pm and from 7-9 pm, at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A. located at 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117, where Masonic memorial services will begin at 8 pm.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 6, at 10 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 109 Main Street, Reisterstown, MD 21136.

Interment to follow in Parkwood Cemetery, Baltimore, MD. Following interment, a light lunch reception will be held at Ionic Lodge No. 145 located at 85 Main Street, Reisterstown, MD 21136.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's name may be offered to Masonic Charities of Maryland or the Ionic Lodge Charitable Foundation.
